The long wait seems to be over as The Cure may have confirmed the release date for their first album in 16 years. Fans received cryptic postcards that suggest the album will be titled Songs of a Lost World and is set to be released on November 1, 2024. The postcards feature Roman numerals at the bottom, which translate to the release date, but Johnny Marr did reveal the truth about The Cure as well.
The band’s last album, 4:13 Dream, came out in 2008 and reached No. 16 on the Billboard 200. Recently, they released a double A-side vinyl with live versions of two new songs, “And Nothing Is Forever” and “I Can Never Say Goodbye,” recorded during their Shows Of A Lost World tour in 2022. The vinyl was released via Naked Vinyl, a label focused on sustainable vinyl, with proceeds going to the climate charity Earth Percent, founded by Brian Eno.
Robert Smith, the band’s frontman, has talked about the album in interviews, mentioning that he often goes back to redo songs, which has caused some delays. He described the album as darker, influenced by personal losses, but not entirely gloomy, incorporating soundscapes similar to their album Disintegration.
On top of that, Roger O’Donnell, a member of the band, shared that he was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of lymphoma in 2023 but has since recovered.
