Ted Cruz jokes about Meghan Markle ‘trolled’ claim
Texas Senator Ted Cruz has taken a swipe at Meghan Markle’s recent assertion that she has been the “most trolled person” globally, suggesting the description better fits President Donald Trump. The comments came as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex continue engagements in Australia, where Meghan has spoken publicly about online abuse and its impact on mental health.
Daily Mail reported that Mr. Cruz told TMZ he would “probably say it’s Donald Trump” when asked who he believed was the most trolled person in the world.
Mr. Cruz added that, in his view, “some” trolling is fair while “some is unfair”, and said he is familiar with being mocked online, adding that he laughs when it is funny and will sometimes respond in kind. He also offered a compliment about Meghan, saying he enjoyed her performance in the legal drama Suits, which he described as an “awesome” series.
Meghan’s remarks about trolling were made during a discussion with students in Melbourne about social media and mental health, during which she said she had been “bullied and attacked” for “ten years” and described herself as “the most trolled person in the entire world”, which echoed claims previously reported in her comments about being trolled every day for a decade.
The exchange is the latest to draw attention to the public debate around online harassment and the scrutiny faced by high-profile figures, with the Sussexes’ Australia visit continuing to generate headlines around their public speeches and media coverage.
