Meghan Markle says she was trolled for 10 years
Meghan Markle has spoken about online abuse during an appearance in Melbourne, telling students that she believes she was “the most trolled person in the entire world” after a decade of being “bullied and attacked”. The Duchess of Sussex made the comments while visiting Swinburne University of Technology as she and Prince Harry continue a four-day programme of engagements in Australia focused on mental health and youth support.
At an event with mental health organisation Batyr, Meghan said she had faced daily attacks for 10 years and told the audience: “Now, I’m still here,” Hello Magazine reported.
Meghan also criticised what she described as a digital culture “anchored and predicated on cruelty to get clicks,” arguing that it is unlikely to change quickly and urging young people to be “stronger than that”. Standing alongside her, Prince Harry praised Australia’s move to restrict social media access for under-16s, describing the decision as “epic” from a leadership perspective, while adding that companies should be accountable so that young people are not punished by bans.
The Melbourne remarks came as the Sussexes’ itinerary continued with further public engagements and media attention, following previous Britpop News coverage of their planned four-day schedule in Australia and its focus on mental health initiatives.
The couple are expected to continue appearances in Sydney, where their campaigning around online safety and youth wellbeing is set to remain central to the visit.
