Commentator Questions Timing of Harry’s Ukraine Trip
Prince Harry’s surprise visit to Ukraine has prompted debate over its diplomatic timing, with a royal commentator suggesting the trip could be unhelpful as King Charles prepares for a state visit to the United States. The Duke of Sussex travelled to Kyiv for a two-day trip on Thursday, during which he issued remarks about the war and called on the US to show leadership.
GB News reported that royal commentator Mr Richard Fitzwilliams claimed the visit was “deliberately timed and will not be popular”, arguing that the Duke’s comments and the surrounding attention could complicate the atmosphere ahead of the King’s upcoming engagement in the US.
According to the report, Prince Harry said: “President Putin, no nation benefits from the continued loss of life we are witnessing. There is still a moment – now – to stop this war, to prevent further suffering for Ukrainians and Russians alike, and to choose a different course.” He also called on the US for “leadership” and to “honour its international treaty obligations”.
Mr Fitzwilliams told the broadcaster that while the Duke’s actions and words would normally be seen as admirable, the timing “will certainly not be helpful” given the state visit, adding that he believed high-profile figures operate with public relations considerations. The segment also referenced remarks attributed to US President Mr Donald Trump, who responded to the Duke’s comments by saying he was speaking for the UK “more than Prince Harry”.
The latest exchange follows earlier coverage of the fallout from the comments, including reporting that Donald Trump fired back at Prince Harry over Ukraine remarks, as attention grows on how the Duke’s interventions intersect with broader royal and political engagements.
Prince Harry later denied in an ITV interview that his words would affect the King’s US visit, while Mr Trump also said he was looking forward to the trip. The timing and tone of the Duke’s Ukraine visit is likely to remain a talking point as King Charles’s state engagements approach.
