Prince Harry and Meghan Markle friendships reportedly cool
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have reportedly seen parts of their social circle shrink in recent years, with claims that some high-profile friendships have cooled since the couple relocated to the United States. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who live in Montecito, California, with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, are said to have experienced a change in dynamics with certain celebrity contacts.
Daily Express reported that Page Six claimed some of the couple’s famous friends are “tired” of footing the bill for them, with a source alleging that support can include private jets or paying for events.
According to the same reporting, a source quoted by the Daily Mail alleged that the Sussexes “ask for a lot of resources to be spent” because they believe it is a “privilege” to be in their circle, and claimed they feel “entitled” to private planes. The source also made a separate allegation about the Duchess of Sussex’s attitude to costs, though the claims were not supported with documentary evidence in the report.
The latest suggestion of social distance follows other unverified talk about how the couple are perceived in celebrity circles, including claims that some celebrities have been keeping their distance from Meghan Markle as the Sussexes pursue projects outside the Royal Family.
The report also referenced the Sussexes’ links to well-known figures who attended their 2018 wedding at St George’s Chapel, Windsor, including Oprah Winfrey, George and Amal Clooney, and David and Victoria Beckham. It added that relationships can evolve over time, particularly as the couple’s public roles and priorities have shifted since stepping back from official royal duties.
