Meghan Scone Post Sparks Royal Fan Backlash
Meghan Markle has sparked renewed online criticism after social media users accused her of echoing Prince William in the long-running British debate over how to serve scones. The reaction followed an Instagram clip shared by Meghan’s lifestyle brand, As Ever, posted the day after the Prince of Wales discussed his own preference during a radio interview from Cornwall.
Express.co.uk reported that Prince William told Heart Radio presenters Ms Amanda Holden and Mr Jamie Theakston he learned from his late grandmother to put cream on first and jam on top, and that Meghan’s brand then shared a “warm scones” recipe which prompted commenters to draw comparisons.
In the video, As Ever suggested serving scones with its Strawberry or Raspberry Spread, Orange Blossom Honey and flower sprinkles, with the post referencing “raw cream” rather than the clotted cream traditionally associated with British cream teas. The article said critics highlighted the timing of the post and took to platforms including Reddit and X to complain, with one Reddit user writing: “Oh for f***’s sake: just days after Prince William says how the late Queen put clotted cream on her scones before jam, As ever does THIS.”
The post also came as the brand teased another product launch, with Express.co.uk saying fans speculated it could be a matchbox after an image showed an As Ever candle alongside a branded box and the caption, “A small spark, arriving tomorrow.” The latest reaction follows earlier discussion around Meghan’s online strategy, including claims that her scone post was allegedly “strategic” amid renewed UK return talk.
While debates about cream and jam are often treated lightly, the response illustrates how Meghan’s lifestyle content continues to be interpreted through a royal lens, with even small posts prompting wider conversations about comparisons with the Prince of Wales and the Sussexes’ relationship with UK audiences.
