Zayn Malik canceled his show in Newcastle just minutes before he was supposed to perform. He’s on his Stairway to the Sky tour and had already performed in cities like London, Manchester, and Leeds. Fans at Newcastle City Hall on Tuesday were surprised when they were told over the loudspeaker that the concert wouldn’t take place. Unfortunately, Liam Payne’s sister couldn’t save him either.
The announcement said the show was canceled because Zayn was having voice problems, and fans were asked to contact where they bought tickets for refunds or new dates. Zayn later shared on Instagram that his voice wasn’t ready, and he couldn’t perform that night. He apologized and said he had hoped to continue but couldn’t.
“Will no longer go ahead tonight. We apologise for the late notice, it was his hope that he would be able to continue with the show. But this is no longer possible. Please contact your point of purchase for reschedule or refunds. If you have parents or guardians collecting you, please stay in the auditorium and wait to be collected.”
“I’m so sorry to do this but my voice just isn’t there at all tonight and without it there’s no show. I’m truly sorry to let you down, especially at such short notice…. I held onto hope until the very last moment. I’m hopeful with some rest tonight I’ll be back on stage tomorrow. My deepest apologies Newcastle love you all xx.”
Fans took to social media to express their disappointment. Some said they were confused because security told them Zayn had been at the venue but left before the show. However, many fans defended Zayn, saying he has struggled with anxiety and had recently lost a close friend, which might have affected him.
This is Zayn’s first solo tour, as he hasn’t toured on his own since leaving One Direction in 2015. He has been open about his mental health struggles, which have kept him from touring in the past. Even so, he has still performed hits like “Pillowtalk” and “Ignorance Ain’t Bliss.”
Zayn also honored his late friend and former bandmate Liam Payne, who passed away recently. During his concert in Liam’s hometown of Wolverhampton, Zayn dedicated the show to him with a message on the screen. Zayn also postponed the U.S. part of the tour because of his loss, rescheduling the dates for January.
