Robert Smith from The Cure is selling signed artwork to raise money for charity. He shared the news on his Instagram on October 4, explaining how fans can buy the prints, but Smith also talked about his inspiration behind ‘Alone.’
He has signed A4 and A3 prints of four artworks called “Alone,” “And Nothing Is Forever,” “Endsong,” and “It’s Just The Way I Smile” You Said. The money raised will go to Heart Research UK. Three of the pieces are inspired by their upcoming album, Songs Of A Lost World, which will be their first album since 2008’s 4:13 Dream.
The pieces include “Alone,” which is an abstract artwork using black, blue, yellow, and green; “Endsong,” which shows a red sphere in a starry sky; and “And Nothing Is Forever,” featuring two sculptures under a red sky. The last piece, “It’s Just The Way I Smile” You Said, is a close-up portrait based on the lyrics of the song “Plainsong.” This piece was made in 2021, while the others were created for the charity in 2023.
Fans can bid on each piece, with one available in both A4 and A3 sizes, all signed by Smith. The auction has already received over ten bids for each artwork, with prices between £230 and £411. Since there are nine days left, these prices are likely to go up.
Songs Of A Lost World is set to be released on November 1, and The Cure recently released the first single, “Alone.” Smith said the song was inspired by a poem called “Dregs” by Ernest Dowson. He often writes down interesting lines he finds, and while looking for the right imagery for “Alone,” he discovered inspiration in the poem.
The band has also teased another new song called “Endsong.” They will perform two special shows as part of Radio 2 In Concert later this month, where they will share more tracks from the new album.
Fans have been waiting for this album for years. After their performance at Glastonbury in 2019, Smith mentioned that the album would explore darker themes, similar to their 1982 album Pornography. He said that although he has not changed much, his experiences with difficult times in life have made him a more balanced person.
In 2022, he revealed that the band was working on two albums, calling Songs Of A Lost World “relentless doom and gloom” and describing the second album as more cheerful.
