The Cure has teased a new track called “Drone” from their upcoming album Songs Of A Lost World. The brief clip, which was shared via their WhatsApp channel, features a heavy, distorted bassline and powerful drums. In a five-star review by NME’s Andrew Trendell, the track was described as “a wailing, noir rocker with a devious earworm chorus,” comparing it to iconic Cure songs like “One Hundred Years,” “Burn,” and “Killing An Arab.” In fact, The Cure and Radiohead teamed up against AI as well.
Fans can access the full clip by unlocking a special website using the album’s release date, November 1, 2024. This new album marks The Cure’s first release since 2008’s 4:13 Dream and has already been promoted with two singles, “Alone” and “A Fragile Thing.”
In the same review, NME praised the album’s emotional depth, calling it “arguably the most personal album of Robert Smith’s career.” Smith opened up about how writing about his brother’s death in the song “I Can Never Say Goodbye” helped him process the loss. He explained that he approached the track with a simple narrative to capture the emotional weight of that night. The music plays a crucial role in conveying the mood, allowing the song to become cathartic for him.
Smith has hinted at the possibility of two more albums in the future, but for now, Songs Of A Lost World promises to be a powerful addition to The Cure’s legacy.
