Robert Smith, the lead singer of The Cure, has criticized dynamic ticket pricing, calling it a “scam” driven by greed. Smith, who had earlier spoken out against high ticket fees and battled with Ticketmaster, continues to raise concerns about the cost of concert tickets. The Cure also released a new single called ‘A Fragile Thing’ recently.
In a recent interview with The Times, Smith said he was surprised by how much money companies make from ticket sales. He explained that The Cure tries to keep ticket prices low because they believe that giving fans a good experience will make them want to come back for more shows. He also said that charging high prices is only necessary if you’re worried about it being your last chance to make money from fans.
Earlier this year, Smith convinced Ticketmaster to issue small refunds to fans after he pointed out that their fees were higher than the actual ticket prices for The Cure’s tour. This came after he criticized the company for overcharging fans.
Other bands, like Oasis, have faced backlash for using dynamic pricing, which raises ticket prices based on demand. After fans complained, Oasis denied being involved in the decision to use this pricing for their North American tour.
Smith believes that dynamic pricing could end if more artists refused to use it, but he thinks many artists either pretend they don’t know about it or are just being greedy. He wants concerts to be more affordable and fair for fans.
