Royal expert predicts US reaction if Sussex titles removed
A royal commentator has claimed Americans would support Prince William if he stripped Prince Harry and Meghan Markle of their royal titles when he eventually becomes king, amid ongoing debate about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s status after stepping back from royal duties in 2020.
On Express, American podcast host and columnist Ms Maureen Callahan said on The Royals Uncensored podcast that if William took action to remove the couple’s titles, “Americans would be cheering him on”.
Ms Callahan made the remarks while discussing how William might handle unresolved royal controversies in a future reign, telling podcast hosts Ms Jo Elvin and Ms Katie Nicholl that she believed the Prince of Wales could take a tougher stance than King Charles.
The Sussexes, who were granted the Duke and Duchess of Sussex titles by the late Queen Elizabeth II on their wedding day in 2018, can only have those titles removed through a legal process, and the report notes it is not thought to be a step King Charles is likely to take.
The comments come as speculation continues about the shape of William’s future monarchy, after he has previously said he wants “change” and has spoken about doing royal work with a small “r”, signalling a focus on practical impact in communities rather than ceremonial display.
