Prince Harry’s Invictus Games organization just suffered a major setback — because the Australian government has officially pulled future financial support, leaving charity officials shocked and suddenly facing uncertainty about the program’s future.
According to reports, Australia’s Labor government decided not to renew a previously promised AUD$9 million funding package that had been scheduled across three years for Invictus Games support programs in the country.
The timing made the situation even more dramatic because the organization reportedly learned about the decision only hours before the federal budget announcement became public.
Michael Hartung admitted the news blindsided leadership internally.
“We really only found out yesterday evening.”
Hartung also made it clear the reaction behind the scenes was immediate shock.
“A fair degree of shock.”
According to Hartung, the funding loss could directly affect critical services supporting veterans struggling with PTSD, depression, anxiety, and social isolation.
He warned the organization is not simply recreational for many former service members.
“For many veterans, Invictus Australia is not a recreational outlet. It is a lifeline.”
Hartung additionally suggested the decision may create serious complications for Australia’s participation in the 2027 Invictus Games scheduled for Birmingham.
The funding news comes only weeks after Meghan Markle and Prince Harry spent time in Australia meeting veterans and participating in Invictus-related appearances during a public visit to Sydney.
That trip included sailing events and meetings at the Australian War Memorial tied directly to Invictus community outreach.
At the same time, another complication recently hit the organization behind the scenes.
Reports earlier this week revealed Melloney Poole stepped down from her leadership role connected to the 2027 Birmingham Games.
Poole reportedly cited other professional commitments as the reason for leaving the position.
Prince Harry originally founded the Invictus Games in 2014 as one of his signature charitable projects focused on wounded, injured, and sick military veterans through adaptive sports competition and rehabilitation programs.
Over the years, the Games have become one of the most closely associated projects tied to Harry’s public identity following his departure from official royal duties.
At this point, representatives for Prince Harry have not publicly commented on Australia’s decision to cut funding.
But the move creates a difficult situation for Invictus Australia moving forward — especially with questions now growing about future veteran support services and international competition participation.
