Prince Harry’s ‘Emotional Outbursts’ Linked to Trauma
Prince Harry’s past public displays of emotion have been attributed to his willingness to speak openly about childhood trauma, according to comments cited in a new report. The Duke of Sussex has frequently discussed grief, mental health and the pressures of royal life since stepping back from official duties in 2020, including in interviews, a Netflix docuseries and his memoir.
Express.co.uk reported that former royal editor Mr Duncan Larcombe told New magazine that Prince Harry’s “emotional outbursts” may be linked to a “wear your heart on your sleeve” personality, and contrasted that approach with Prince William’s more composed public manner.
In the same piece, Larcombe said Harry has been “quite open about his childhood being flawed and traumatic”, suggesting that openness could help explain why he appears more visibly affected than his older brother when discussing personal matters. The article noted that Prince William has spoken publicly about losing their mother Diana, Princess of Wales, but has tended to keep details of his private life more guarded.
The report also revisited comments Prince Harry made at a Movember event in Australia, where he spoke about therapy and described it as both a way to address past issues and a “preventative” step. The Duke said he sought help before the birth of his first child, Prince Archie, in 2019, and emphasised that people do not need to wait for crisis point to engage with support.
The latest remarks add to a continuing narrative around how the Duke and Prince of Wales handle public life differently, while their relationship remains strained amid ongoing debate about the Sussexes’ decision to leave royal duties and speak candidly about their experiences.
