Prince Harry Links Diana’s Death to Royal Role
Prince Harry has renewed scrutiny of his relationship with the Royal Family after comments made during an appearance in Australia this week, where he referenced the death of his mother, Princess Diana, and reflected on how it shaped his attitude towards royal life.
Speaking at the InterEdge Summit on Thursday, Prince Harry said that after Princess Diana died shortly before his 13th birthday he felt: “I don’t want this job. I don’t want this role”, adding: “It killed my mum”, Express reported.
The remarks were made during a wider discussion in which the Duke of Sussex revisited his longstanding criticism of the pressures of royal duties and the impact the institution has had on his family life since he and Meghan Markle stepped back from official roles in 2020.
They also echo earlier coverage of the same speech, including our report that he said the “institution” killed Princess Diana in Melbourne, a line that has drawn particular attention given Prince William’s future role at the head of the monarchy.
No response has been issued by Buckingham Palace or Kensington Palace to the comments. However, the renewed focus on Diana and the role of the monarchy underscores how public remarks made overseas can quickly reverberate back in the UK, particularly when they touch on the late princess and the brothers’ strained relationship.
