Prince Harry Quotes Diana in Kyiv Speech
Prince Harry quoted his late mother Princess Diana while speaking at the Kyiv Security Conference on Thursday, as the Duke of Sussex delivered remarks about the war in Ukraine and urged continued international attention on the conflict. His appearance in Kyiv marked a high-profile intervention during his visit to Ukraine.
Express reported that Prince Harry said he was “not here as a politician”, describing himself instead as “a soldier”, “a humanitarian” and “a friend of Ukraine”, while warning against the world becoming “used to this war or numb to its consequences”.
In his speech, the Duke argued the conflict was “a war about values” and “sovereignty”, and made a direct reference to Russian President Vladimir Putin while also criticising US President Donald Trump, according to the report. The newspaper said he emphasised that he was speaking from the perspective of service rather than politics.
The phrasing echoed Princess Diana’s 1997 comments during her visit to Angola, when she said she was “not a political figure” but a humanitarian as she campaigned against landmines. Britpop News recently reported on the Ukraine visit when he urged Putin to end the war in Ukraine in remarks at the same conference.
Prince Harry’s Kyiv appearance is likely to draw further scrutiny because of the political sensitivity surrounding foreign policy and the Royal Family’s constitutional neutrality, with any official response expected to focus on his status as a private individual rather than a working royal.
