Meghan Markle’s new Netflix series, With Love, Meghan, is finally out after delays caused by the Los Angeles wildfires. The show gives fans a closer look at Meghan’s personal life, childhood, and journey into motherhood, while also sharing her perspective on leaving royal life behind.
In one episode, Meghan talks with actress Mindy Kaling while they make cucumber sandwiches for a children’s party. She opens up about growing up as a “latchkey kid”, a term for children who spend a lot of time alone at home. Meghan shares that she often ate fast food and TV dinners, mentioning favorites like El Pollo Loco, Taco Bell, and Jack in the Box.
Kaling is surprised, saying, “I don’t think anyone in the world knows that Meghan Markle has eaten Jack in the Box and loves it.”
During their chat, Kaling keeps referring to her as “Meghan Markle,” but Meghan gently corrects her: “It’s so funny you keep saying Meghan Markle; you know I’m Sussex now.”
She explains that after having children, her last name became more meaningful. “You have kids, and you realize, ‘I share my name with my children.’ I didn’t know how important that would be to me, but it just means so much. This is our little family name.”
Kaling responds with a smile, “Well, now I know, and I love it.”
When Meghan and Prince Harry married in 2018, Queen Elizabeth II gave them the titles of Duke and Duchess of Sussex. In the Royal Family, it’s common to use titles instead of last names. But after stepping down from royal duties in 2020 and moving to California, Meghan and Harry decided to fully embrace “Sussex” as their family name.
After Queen Elizabeth passed away, their children, Archie and Lilibet, officially became Prince and Princess. Meghan shares in the series how much it means to her that they all share the Sussex name.
In a recent interview, she said, “It’s our shared name as a family, and I guess I hadn’t realized how meaningful that would be until we had children. I love that it’s something that Archie, Lili, H, and I all have together.”
She also mentions that the Sussex name is part of her and Harry’s love story, symbolizing their journey as a family outside of royal life.
