Meghan Markle anniversary posts fuel Sussex rebrand claims
Meghan Markle has marked her eighth wedding anniversary to Prince Harry with a burst of new social media posts, prompting fresh commentary about how the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are presenting themselves in the US. The couple have dominated headlines after Meghan shared a collection of unseen photographs and videos from family celebrations at their home in Montecito, California.
Brand and culture expert Nick Ede said the online activity suggested the Sussexes were aiming to move on from years dominated by royal controversy and instead reshape their public image; Daily Express reported that he viewed the anniversary posts as an attempt to “reposition” them as a modern, aspirational California family brand in Hollywood.
Mr Ede also warned that family-focused content can be powerful but risky for a couple who have previously spoken about privacy and protecting their children from media exposure. He said the posts appeared designed to project stability and affection “despite everything that’s been written” about them since they stepped back as working royals and moved to the United States in 2020.
The anniversary clips and images included Prince Harry bringing out a lemon elderflower cake with candles, while the voices of Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet could be heard singing in the background. Meghan also shared a personal gift from the Duke: a sculpture depicting two penguins embracing.
The posts arrived amid ongoing scrutiny of the Sussexes’ celebrity profile, with commentary focusing on whether their public-facing approach is shifting towards lifestyle and family messaging. For the couple, the anniversary celebration has become the latest moment in their evolving public strategy as they continue to build projects outside the Royal Family.
