Madonna Recalls NYC Space Heater Fire
Madonna has shared a stark memory from her early years in New York, saying she accidentally started an electrical fire while living “illegally” in a building in the city’s Garment District as she tried to keep warm during winter.
Page Six reported that the singer told Bilt founder and CEO Ankur Jain she had no heat at the time and slept on the floor in a sleeping bag surrounded by space heaters, before waking up “surrounded by flames.”
Madonna, now 67, said she was around 19 when she was squatting in different buildings after a break-up, and later moved into The Music Building on Eighth Avenue, where she described musicians time-sharing rehearsal rooms and her own makeshift sleeping arrangement near a bass drum.
The recollection comes as she partners with Bilt on an initiative to cover one month of rent for musicians living in The Music Building, and follows other recent headlines around the star, including when she offered a reward for a missing Coachella costume.
Bilt also announced a limited-edition vinyl tied to Madonna’s forthcoming album “Confessions On A Dance Floor: Part II,” with the report stating it is scheduled for release on 3 July and will include tracks reflecting her early career, including a song titled “Danceteria.”
