King Charles has chosen not to get involved in his son Prince Harry’s ongoing security battle, and there’s a reason for that, according to an expert.
Prince Harry has been in a legal fight for over four years to regain his right to security in the UK, a privilege he lost in 2020 when he stepped back from royal duties and moved to California. The King, however, cannot directly influence decisions about security, as those matters are handled by the government, not the monarchy, explained Ingrid Seward, editor-in-chief of Majesty magazine.
Seward believes that while Charles may not be responding to Harry’s phone calls or letters, it’s likely because he cannot get involved in government policy. She added that the King simply doesn’t have the time, energy, or desire for what would be a difficult conversation.
Harry’s legal battle has affected his relationship with his father, and sources have suggested that the lack of communication has only worsened their estrangement. Additionally, with the King facing health struggles, including a cancer diagnosis, it’s been a challenging year for the royal family, and Charles’ reduced capacity to assist his son has made things more difficult.
The issue of security is just one element of the strained relationship between Harry and his family, which has been tense ever since the Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped back from their royal roles. Harry’s memoir and public interviews have further detailed the rocky dynamic with his relatives.
In the midst of this, Harry is pushing for reinstated security for his family, so they can visit the UK more freely. However, it seems that for now, the King remains largely removed from this issue, as his role as monarch prevents him from intervening directly.
