Kate Middleton delivers first Welsh video message for St David’s Day
Kate Middleton has marked St David’s Day with a surprise video message alongside Prince William, delivering remarks in Welsh on camera for the first time. The message, shared on March 1 to coincide with Wales’ national day, underlined the Prince and Princess of Wales’ continuing links with the country.
InStyle reported that the Prince and Princess of Wales recorded a St David’s Day greeting entirely in Welsh, with the Princess saying: “Wales is very close to our hearts, and we look forward to every visit.” The outlet said Kate wore a red and black houndstooth dress with a daffodil pin, the national flower of Wales.
In the same message, Prince William opened the greeting by wishing people in Wales a happy St David’s Day, while Kate ended by wishing viewers “a day full of celebration with family and friends”. The publication said the video was recorded earlier in the week on the Windsor estate at Frogmore House.
The Welsh-language greeting comes days after the couple travelled to Wales for engagements in Powys, a trip that followed their high-profile BAFTAs appearance in London amid intense scrutiny of the Royal Family. The Wales visit included time with well-wishers who turned out despite wet weather to see the couple.
The message is likely to be seen as part of the Prince and Princess of Wales’ efforts to emphasise their relationship with Wales and its culture, as Prince William continues in his role as Prince of Wales. Their use of Welsh on the national holiday also follows previous St David’s Day messaging in which William appeared alone.
