Meghan Markle Outfit Links Spark UK Security Questions
Meghan Markle’s decision to link outfits from a recent Australia visit to a shopping platform has prompted fresh questions about how the Duke and Duchess of Sussex balance commercial activity with royal-adjacent appearances, as Prince Harry continues his fight over taxpayer-funded security in the UK. The issue has been raised as the Duke is expected to return to Britain this summer for an Invictus Games-related event.
In an analysis of the couple’s trip, Hello Magazine reported that eyebrows were raised after the Duchess partnered with AI-driven shopping platform OneOff, allowing readers to shop items similar to those she wore during engagements in Australia and earning a commission.
The piece notes that items included a look worn when meeting survivors and first responders connected to the Bondi Beach terror attack, and says the outfit was later removed from the site after criticism. It adds that the Home Office’s Royal and VIP Executive Committee (RAVEC) decision on Harry’s security remains under review following his appeal against a High Court ruling backing the downgrade of his protection.
The commercial element of the tour has been scrutinised before, with Britpop News previously reporting that Meghan was said to be “proud” of the earnings linked to the Australia trip.
Harry has argued that, as the son of the King, he should have full armed protection when in the UK and has said he does not believe it is safe to bring Meghan and their children without it. With a decision still pending, the debate highlights continuing tensions around how the Sussexes fund their life and security outside the royal payroll.
