Meghan Markle sparks backlash after two-hour Sydney retreat appearance
Meghan Markle has drawn criticism after making a brief appearance at a high-priced wellness retreat in Sydney, with some attendees complaining they did not get the experience they expected for the cost. The Duchess of Sussex appeared at the InterContinental Sydney Coogee Beach as part of a “girls weekend” event billed around connection and personal growth.
Hello Magazine reported that guests paid up to $3,199 for the so-called “Megstock” weekend, but Meghan attended for around two hours, arriving at about 5pm with Prince Harry before leaving roughly 120 minutes later in a waiting Range Rover.
The report said Meghan took part in an onstage Q&A session during her visit and spoke about the pressures of public life, describing it as “very hard” at times, while also reflecting on “amazing moments” since she met Prince Harry in 2016, including their marriage and becoming parents. Hello Magazine also reported claims that Meghan was paid $150,000 for the appearance, which was part of the “Her Best Life” retreat organised by podcast hosts Ms Gemma O’Neill and Ms Jackie Henderson.
Online reaction focused on the duration of her visit, with some social media users questioning why she did not stay longer or share a meal with guests. The backlash comes amid wider scrutiny around the event’s premium pricing, after Britpop News reported allegations that Meghan was charging extra for a VIP photo opportunity at the Sydney retreat.
A representative for the Duchess of Sussex said her limited role had been set in advance, stating that Meghan was “always confirmed only to attend the retreat for her Q&A portion of the weekend” and that she “had a lovely time” speaking with Ms O’Neill in front of an “engaging audience”.
