Home Office reviews Prince Harry UK security again
Prince Harry’s long-running dispute over UK police protection has returned to the spotlight after claims that the Home Office is reviewing his case again, six years after he stepped back from frontline royal duties and moved to the United States with Meghan Markle.
Express.co.uk reported that the Duke of Sussex lost a court case on the issue last year, but that the Home Office is believed to be reconsidering the position, raising fresh questions about whether he should receive the same security arrangements as working royals when he visits the UK.
The report notes that when the Duke and Duchess of Sussex left royal duties in 2020 and relocated to the US, they were informed they would no longer have automatic 24/7 police protection in Britain. It adds that Prince Harry has criticised that change and has continued to press for it to be reversed, arguing that his profile as a senior member of the Royal Family brings ongoing risks for him and his family.
Previous reporting has also focused on the financial and procedural elements of the dispute, including claims that the Home Office “blocked” a bid connected to funding arrangements for Prince Harry’s security as the issue moved through official channels.
Any renewed assessment would be expected to weigh the Duke’s personal safety concerns against the precedent for other non-working royals, as well as the public cost and operational implications of providing police protection during private visits.
