Travis Kelce is set to ‘get close to the family and figure things out’ as he weighs up retiring from the NFL after the Kansas City Chiefs were beaten by the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday via Daily Mail.
Andy Reid’s team recently concluded their disappointing season, which ended their streak of making the playoffs for the first time since 2014, with a narrow 14-12 defeat to the NFL’s weakest team. Rumors that Taylor Swift’s fiancé might retire from football after 13 seasons have intensified recently, but Sunday’s loss could be a heartbreaking farewell if he decides to retire.
Footage of him returning to the locker room after the game showed Kelce looking particularly dejected as he faces a major decision about his future.
When asked in the locker room about his timeline for making a decision, Kelce responded, ‘First things first, I just love this team. I’m proud of the way we finished this, even though it ended the way it did.
‘Guys still showed up. Gave it their all and that’s all you can ask for, man. I’ve got so much love for this team, this organization and the people here so I’ll spend some time with them, go through exit meetings tomorrow, get close to the family and figure things out.
‘Who knows? Either it hits me quick or I’ve got to take some time. Last year was a little bit easier. I think I knew right away I wanted to give this one a shot. I don’t know. We’ll see.’
When asked whether he felt he achieved what he wanted to when he decided to return this season, Kelce replied: ‘Obviously we didn’t do as well as a team but I feel like I came into the season prepared and ready to rock and roll with the right intentions.
‘The ball just didn’t go our way in a lot of those close games unfortunately and I think if I do choose to come back that’s something I’ve really got to focus on, making sure I’m available and ready for those moments.’
Without the injured Patrick Mahomes at quarterback on Sunday, the Chiefs failed to score a touchdown and put up just 168 yards of total offense. Instead, all 12 of their points came from the boot of kicker Harrison Butker.
However, despite the loss in Sin City, it was still a good day for Kelce personally as he made more NFL history. He became just the third tight end in NFL history to reach 13,000 career receiving yards, finishing with 12 off three receptions and six targets.
