It was this week that The Cure brought their current tour, dubbed Song of a Lost World, to Los Angeles for a trio of performances at the acclaimed Hollywood Bowl venue.
The group’s City of Angels stay commenced on May 23, when the band, led by Robert Smith, dropped “Another Happy Birthday” into the night’s main frame, representing a debut for the ensemble.
The never-before-heard track dates back to 1997, when Smith made mention of the existence of the song in connection to B-sides and rarities churned out by the iconic British rock band.
In an interview with MTV, Smith described the track as a favorite, adding,
“Unlike anything the Cure have done before. It’s not a verse-chorus-verse type of song, but more fluid.”
The debut represented a continued trend by the band, who had previously performed “Alone,” “A Fragile Thing,” “And Nothing Is Forever,” and “I Can Never Say Goodbye” for the first time on their current tour and continues to emphasize the band’s emotionally evocative response in song with the lyrics: “And your birthday is the worst day/ I’m singing to a ghost/ Happy birthday/ I forget how it goes.”
The Cure will continue the North American leg of their Song of a Lost World run, which will extend through the first of July, following a New York City stand at Madison Square Garden on June 20 through 22, before concluding at Miami’s Kaseya Center.
