Taylor Swift Hit With ‘Showgirl’ Trademark Suit
Taylor Swift is facing a trademark infringement lawsuit filed by Las Vegas entertainer Ms Maren Wade, who alleges the singer’s recent album title and related merchandise encroach on Wade’s long-running “Confessions of a Showgirl” brand. The legal action, reported in the US on 30 March, seeks to stop use of the phrase “The Life of a Showgirl” across goods and services and also requests damages.
TMZ reported that Wade claims she has built “Confessions of a Showgirl” into a brand over more than a decade, tracing its origins to a weekly column launched in 2014 and later expanding into live shows, a touring production and digital media.
In the filing, Wade alleges she trademarked “Confessions of a Showgirl” in 2015 and argues the two titles are “super similar”, citing their structure and “overall commercial impression”, as well as what she claims are overlapping markets and audiences. The lawsuit also asserts Swift and her team were familiar with trademark law and proceeded despite the similarity.
The dispute adds to a wider pattern of litigation and brand-protection around high-profile artists, following Swift’s previous legal moves including her action over an alleged ‘false’ endorsement in another matter involving her name and commercial use.
According to the report, Wade is seeking an injunction that would bar Swift, her management, record label and merchandising partners from using “The Life of a Showgirl”. Swift’s representatives have not publicly responded to the latest claim.
