Sarah Ferguson Lived Separately From Prince Andrew
Sarah Ferguson and Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s long-running cohabitation at Royal Lodge involved separate living quarters and limited day-to-day contact, a royal biographer has claimed. The detail comes as new reporting revisits the former couple’s unusual arrangements after Andrew relinquished the lease on the Windsor property in February 2026.
Royal author Andrew Lownie wrote that Sarah Ferguson had apartments “at the opposite end of the house” and suggested there “wasn’t much contact” between the pair, despite occasional meetings and phone calls. Hello Magazine reported that Lownie also claimed there was a “cynical idea” Andrew served as a calling card for Ferguson’s business interests and her access to royal circles.
Ferguson has previously spoken publicly about the set-up, describing herself as “lucky enough to stay at Royal Lodge” while stopping short of calling it her home. In earlier interviews, she also characterised the pair as “the happiest divorced couple in the world”, saying the size of the house made the arrangement workable.
The new claims follow extensive scrutiny of the pair’s living situation in recent years, including questions over Royal Lodge and the Duke’s housing security, as Prince Andrew’s long-term lease reportedly prevented Royal Lodge eviction at the height of speculation about his future there.
Lownie has suggested their relationship may now be at a breaking point, arguing Ferguson could see Andrew as “toxic” to her commercial prospects. He also speculated they may ultimately live in different countries, as Ferguson’s recent whereabouts have included a reported stay at a wellness spa in Austria.
