In an interview with The Big Issue, Radiohead’s Colin Greenwood talked about his teenage years, old fashion choices, and key moments in his life. He joked that he never lets his brother Jonny forget that he was the one who got him into the band. Colin teased that Jonny should thank him more often for letting him play on Radiohead songs. With that said, the band recently revisited OK Computer for their reunion.
Despite the joke, Colin spoke highly of Jonny’s talent. He remembered how quickly Jonny learned guitar by listening to bands like Pixies and praised Jonny’s first string arrangements for The Bends, calling him an amazing musician.
I think it’s very important that I see him acknowledge that more publicly more often. Put that as your headline – Jonny would like to thank his brother Colin for giving him permission to occasionally play on a Radiohead song. But no, actually, it’s brilliant playing together. He could play the keyboards and then he learned the guitar very quickly, listening to Pixies and Lou Reed’s New York album, and that was it. It was just amazing. I remember the first string sessions he wrote for Radiohead for The Bends. It was just brilliant. What an amazing musician and artist he is.
“I was talking to Nick about this too. He’s just such an amazing listener, and he was saying that Radiohead would be in a position to go and do whatever we wanted in terms of when we play, what we play and how we play.
“He was talking about Bob Dylan, who can just be on the road for two years or not at all and play all the hits or something different each night.
“You can put out a new album or you can do crazy projects. There’s a freedom that we have that we should appreciate. It’s not like we’ve reached a point where people are only interested in listening to something from the first three albums.
“I think we’re still a band where people might want to know what might happen next. We’re very lucky to have that.”
