After Quincy Jones shared his opinion on The Beatles, Paul McCartney responded. In a 2018 interview with New York Magazine, Jones, who passed away on November 3 at the age of 91, gave his honest thoughts about the famous band. He described The Beatles as “no-playing motherf—ers” and criticized their musical skills. McCartney also recently shared his last photos with Quincy Jones.
Jones said that Paul McCartney was “the worst bass player I ever heard” and also had harsh words for Ringo Starr, calling him out for struggling with a simple part of a song. He recalled a time when Ringo took hours to fix a four-bar section of a song, so the team decided to bring in a jazz drummer, Ronnie Verrell, who completed it in just 15 minutes. Jones joked about Ringo’s reaction when he heard the playback, saying, “That didn’t sound so bad,” to which Jones replied, “Yeah, motherf—er, because it ain’t you.”
McCartney, 82, responded to Jones’ comments in a 2018 GQ interview, expressing that he still had affection for Jones despite the harsh words. He said Jones called him after the interview and denied making the comments, claiming, “I didn’t really say that thing. I don’t know what happened.” McCartney laughed it off, saying that if Jones had really said those things, he would have told him to “f— you.”
McCartney continued, saying that while Jones is a talented musician, he didn’t think he was the worst bass player Jones had ever heard. He also compared the situation to jazz drummer Buddy Rich criticizing Ringo’s drumming, saying that from Buddy Rich’s perspective, Ringo might not be a great drummer, but from The Beatles’ point of view, Buddy Rich’s opinion didn’t matter much.
Quincy Jones, a music legend known for his work with Frank Sinatra and Michael Jackson, passed away surrounded by his family. He is survived by his seven children and several grandchildren.
