Prince William says Attenborough inspired his children
Prince William has paid tribute to Sir David Attenborough at a gala event marking the broadcaster’s 100th birthday, telling guests that the naturalist’s work helped shape the outlook of Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. The Prince of Wales spoke at the Royal Albert Hall in London, using the occasion to underline Attenborough’s influence on his family and on environmental action more broadly.
In his remarks, Hello Magazine reported that Prince William said his children had grown up with Attenborough’s “incredible storytelling”, calling it a “window into the wonders of nature” that shaped their understanding of the planet and their belief it is “something worth fighting for.”
The Prince of Wales also described Attenborough’s voice as “a constant in our lives” and credited him with helping others find “clarity, urgency, and optimism” in conversations about protecting the natural world. Prince William told the audience that Attenborough’s “urgent optimism” had made “all the difference”, adding that their friendship had been “profound” and had strengthened his own determination to act.
The speech also highlighted Attenborough’s formal connection to the Prince’s environmental work, noting that the broadcaster was the first member of the Earthshot Prize Council and helped launch the £50 million initiative in 2020. In a separate milestone for the family, Prince William and Kate Middleton recently marked their 15th wedding anniversary with a new family photo.
William’s comments placed Attenborough’s centenary as both a celebration of a lifetime in broadcasting and a prompt for continued environmental action, with the Prince urging those inspired by the naturalist’s work to carry that spirit into future efforts to safeguard the planet.
