Prince William to Keep Aston Villa Match Habit
Prince William is expected to continue attending major Aston Villa matches even after he becomes King, despite the tighter security and heavier schedule that will come with becoming sovereign, according to a BBC royal correspondent.
Writing about the Prince of Wales’ long-standing support for the Premier League club, the BBC said its royal correspondent Ms Daniela Relph believes William has “nailed his colours firmly and publicly to Aston Villa and that won’t change, whatever the job,” though she added that his movements will inevitably be more restricted once he is crowned.
In remarks attributed to Ms Relph, she said security would “always be a factor” and that while William “won’t be a matchday regular”, he is expected to attend “the big moments” and “crucial games”. The comments follow William being seen celebrating Aston Villa’s 4-0 win over Nottingham Forest last week, with reports that he also went to the dressing room after the final whistle to congratulate the players.
William’s public interest in football extends beyond his personal support for the Birmingham club, with the Prince serving as patron of the Football Association and previously holding the role of its president. Previous reports about his approach to public life have also highlighted the pressures that come with senior royal roles, including claims that he was “sick with worry” ahead of the Sussexes’ Oprah interview.
The Prince of Wales’ attendance at matches has increasingly drawn attention as the future King takes on more public duties. Any continued appearances at high-profile fixtures are likely to be carefully planned around official engagements and security arrangements.
