William, Prince of Wales appears to be changing his tune when it comes to Prince George of Wales and football fandom — especially after years of joking that his eldest son could support any club except Chelsea F.C..
Ahead of the FA Cup final between Chelsea and Manchester City F.C., old comments from William about George’s football loyalties started resurfacing online.
Back in 2019 during BBC’s A Berry Royal Christmas, William joked about trying to steer George away from Chelsea fandom.
“I try not to be too biased, I said you can support anyone but Chelsea, so naturally he supports Chelsea.”
At the time, the comment got attention because William is famously devoted to Aston Villa F.C. and regularly attends matches.
But over the years, William’s stance appears to have softened considerably. During more recent interviews, including appearances on TNT Sports and That Peter Crouch Podcast, the Prince of Wales made it clear he now wants George to make his own decision naturally.
“I’m genuinely open to whoever they support,” William said during a TNT Sports appearance. “I’m a bit biased but also they come to Villa games so they’re probably going to support Villa.”
He also previously explained:
“It’s about finding what fits for him.”
The shift in tone has been noticeable as George continues appearing more frequently alongside his father at major football matches, including Aston Villa’s recent European run and high-profile fixtures across England.
Bottom line: Prince William may still be a diehard Aston Villa supporter, but when it comes to Prince George’s football loyalties, the future king now seems far more relaxed — even if Chelsea apparently remains the club that started all the family debate.
