Prince Andrew’s involvement in a Chinese spy scandal might be the final push King Charles needs to remove him from the Royal Lodge, a move the King has reportedly been trying to make for over a year.
Sarah Ferguson, Andrew’s ex-wife, who still lives with him at the Royal Lodge, has publicly defended him. In a recent interview, royal commentator Sarah Louise Robertson noted Ferguson’s cautious approach:
“Sarah herself said, ‘Let’s not cause any more trouble or embarrassment to the King or the royal family. Let’s keep our heads down.’”
The scandal adds to Andrew’s history of controversies, including his association with Jeffrey Epstein, which led to him stepping back from royal duties in 2020 and losing his HRH status in 2022. Despite these issues, King Charles has allowed Andrew to maintain some connection to the family.
Robertson predicts increasing pressure on Andrew to vacate the Royal Lodge in the coming year and move to a smaller property on the Windsor estate. She clarified that Andrew wouldn’t be left without support, as the royal family continues to assist him financially and with housing.
The latest controversy involves Andrew hiring Yang Tengbo, an alleged Chinese spy, as a “business adviser.” Tengbo, later barred from the U.K., denied the allegations, calling them “entirely untrue.” Still, the incident raises concerns about national security and further damages Andrew’s already fragile reputation.
Some insiders emphasize the difficulty of handling Andrew’s situation without entirely severing ties, given his family status. They note that while sanctions have been imposed, the royal family remains bound by blood ties.
Despite the ongoing controversies, Andrew and Ferguson are expected to spend Christmas at the Royal Lodge, though their daughters will reportedly be with their in-laws.
