Prince Harry’s ‘Spare’ swipe at Prince Andrew resurfaces as Epstein scrutiny intensifies
Prince Harry’s past criticism of Prince Andrew has re-emerged this week as renewed attention focuses on the Duke of York’s historic links to Jeffrey Epstein. The comments, drawn from the Duke of Sussex’s memoir Spare, are being widely recirculated after fresh material relating to Epstein prompted further public scrutiny of Andrew’s conduct and relationships.
In the memoir, The Mirror reported that Prince Harry wrote it was a “total bombshell” when publicly funded police protection was removed from him and Meghan in 2020, adding that “nobody had suggested removing” Prince Andrew’s security “despite being involved in an embarrassing scandal” and being “accused of having sexually abused a young woman”.
The Mirror said Prince Harry argued that he and Meghan faced an elevated “threat level” and felt exposed while living in Canada with their infant son, Prince Archie, as borders were closing during the early stages of the Covid-19 pandemic. The report added that entertainment executive Mr Tyler Perry provided the Sussexes with temporary accommodation and private security after their state protection was withdrawn.
The resurfaced passage has also renewed discussion of the differing consequences faced by senior royals, following earlier reporting on Prince Harry’s legal battles and the scrutiny surrounding his claims in court proceedings.
Prince Andrew has repeatedly denied wrongdoing and previously settled a civil case brought by Ms Virginia Giuffre, without any admission of liability. The latest circulation of Prince Harry’s remarks underscores how questions around security, accountability and the Royal Family’s response to scandal continue to resonate well beyond the original events.
