Prince Harry’s Invictus Games is set to come back to where it all began, the United Kingdom and the royal family is expected to be part of it.
Helen Helliwell, the CEO in charge of organizing the 2027 Games in Birmingham, says planning is already well underway, even though it’s still two years away. More than $5.5 million in commercial support has already been raised.
Harry, who created the Invictus Games in 2014 for wounded, injured, and sick service members and veterans, will likely attend.
“We’d be thrilled if he comes over for the countdown event and the Games,” Helliwell says. “It’s too early for anyone to confirm plans, but we’d be delighted if the Duke could make it.”
She added that Harry’s passion for the Games is unmatched. “He really brings a magical sparkle when he’s there, and he has a very special bond with this community. We’d be super excited to have him in Birmingham.”
Helliwell also said it’s meaningful to bring the event back to the U.K. for its eighth edition. “This was his vision back in 2014, and it’s just kept growing. Having it return to the U.K. is going to be really special not just for the country, but for him too, seeing how far the movement has come.”
There’s hope that other royals will also attend. Reports last month said King Charles would be invited. When asked, Helliwell said the royal family has always supported the armed forces and Invictus since it started. “It’s too soon to confirm exactly who will be there, but of course we’d welcome their presence.”
