Prince Harry never had the chance to introduce Meghan Markle to his late mother, Princess Diana, but he has often said he believes Diana would have loved Meghan. He once told the BBC that his mother would have been “over the moon” and even “best friends” with his wife.
In 2017, Harry introduced Meghan to Diana’s siblings, Lady Sarah McCorquodale, Lady Jane Fellowes, and Earl Charles Spencer, in hopes of gaining their support. However, according to royal author Tom Bower’s book Revenge: Meghan, Harry, and the War Between the Windsors, the meeting didn’t go as Harry had hoped.
Bower claims that Harry expected his mother’s family to see a resemblance between Meghan and Diana. Instead, he was reportedly “disappointed” when they disagreed and expressed doubts about Meghan fitting in with the Royal Family.
While Diana’s sisters kept their reservations quiet, it was her brother, Earl Spencer, who openly advised Harry to slow down the relationship. His caution reportedly sparked a bitter reaction from the prince.
“This was going to be really hard,” Harry allegedly reflected, according to Bower.
Despite the initial tension, Harry and Meghan married in 2018 and later stepped away from royal duties in 2020.
