Prince Harry Named in Baroness Lawrence Mail Case
Prince Harry has been referenced in evidence heard at the High Court as part of a privacy lawsuit brought against Associated Newspapers, publisher of the Daily Mail and The Mail on Sunday. The case involves seven claimants, including Baroness Lawrence, and centres on allegations that information was obtained unlawfully.
Giving evidence, former Daily Mail crime editor Stephen Wright said that an intervention by the Duke of Sussex in 2022 altered his professional relationship with Baroness Lawrence, with Daily Mail reporting that Prince Harry contacted her to alert her to information “that she would want to know about” before she joined the claim months later.
Associated Newspapers denies the allegations in the case, which include claims that journalists used private investigators to hack voicemails, intercept calls and obtain private details through deception. The court heard Baroness Lawrence alleges she was “extensively targeted”, including through surveillance and phone bugging.
Mr Wright told the court he had built a professional relationship with Baroness Lawrence following the 1993 murder of her son Stephen Lawrence, and said he arranged multiple interviews during the newspaper’s long-running campaign for justice. Under cross-examination by Mr David Sherborne, he denied allegations that he paid a former police officer to pass money to corrupt serving officers, and said he relied on legitimate sources.
The hearing is continuing, with the outcome expected to shape the wider dispute over alleged unlawful newsgathering and the claimants’ privacy rights.
