Prince Harry Says US Life Feels ‘Liberating’
Prince Harry has spoken about why he is choosing to raise his family in the United States, saying life in California has given him a sense of freedom he never expected. The Duke of Sussex, who stepped back from royal duties with Meghan Markle in 2020, made the comments while discussing his family life and the experiences he can share with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
At the 2024 DealBook Summit, Prince Harry said he “very much” enjoys living in the States and bringing up his children there, Hello Magazine reported, adding that he feels it is “the life that my mom wanted for me” and that being in the US allows him to do things with his children he “undoubtedly wouldn’t be able to do in the UK.”
The Duke has previously described everyday moments as highlights of his life in California, including taking Prince Archie on bike rides and introducing him to new activities. He and Meghan moved from the UK to North America in early 2020, with their formal royal duties ending on 31 March that year following the Sandringham agreement.
The couple’s post-royal life has also included a series of media and business projects, while continuing public work through their Archewell organisation. In separate coverage, Meghan Markle attending a gala without Prince Harry highlighted how the pair increasingly balance joint ventures with separate appearances.
Prince Harry has said he still wants his children to experience the UK, but his latest remarks underline that the family’s long-term base remains in California. The comments add fresh detail to how the Duke frames his move away from royal life, linking it to both parenthood and his late mother Princess Diana’s hopes for him.
