Report claims Prince Harry would need monarch’s consent to remarry
A new report has reignited debate around Prince Harry’s future position in the line of succession, after commentary suggested a potential second marriage would require royal approval. The claims were aired amid wider reporting about the Duke of Sussex’s life in California and ongoing distance from Prince William.
News.com.au reported that a Wall Street Journal piece noted that “if Harry were ever to remarry, he would have to ask the king to consent first”, in a passage that also discussed the possibility of his titles being reviewed when Prince William eventually becomes monarch.
The same commentary referenced claims attributed to author Tom Bower’s forthcoming book and extracts published in The Times, including allegations of “tension” between the Duke and Duchess of Sussex during a New York trip and assertions about their finances. It also pointed to a separate report suggesting Prince Harry has remained in contact with only one of his wedding best men.
Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, have previously rejected Bower’s allegations, with the couple publicly condemning what they described as “deranged conspiracy and melodrama” in response to his claims.
Neither Prince Harry nor Meghan has publicly responded to the latest reporting about royal consent requirements. The discussion underlines how questions around titles, succession rules and the Sussexes’ long-term plans continue to draw scrutiny on both sides of the Atlantic.
