Prince Harry may have to give up his role as patron of the Invictus Games, according to the Daily Mail. He started the event in 2014, but some people close to the charity think he is no longer helping it as much as before. They say his divisive reputation in the UK, especially among the Armed Forces, could hurt the Games and his legacy.
Some believe Invictus should focus on bringing people together and helping those who have faced hardship, but Harry’s presence might distract from that. If he steps down, sources say other senior royals would be ready to take his place.
The next Invictus Games will be in Birmingham, England, from July 12 to July 17, 2027. The dates clash with Queen Camilla’s 80th birthday celebrations, which could make it difficult for the royals to attend. Reports say Harry has invited senior members of his family, which would be his first public attempt to reach out since their falling out more than five years ago.
Even with the criticism, Invictus Games CEO Rob Owen OBE defended Harry. He said Harry’s vision, military service, and passion were the driving force behind the Games, and his involvement has helped change views on mental health, disability, and military life.
It is not clear if Meghan Markle and their children, Archie and Lilibet, will attend the 2027 Games. Harry has said he will not bring them to the UK without full police protection, something he recently lost in court. If Meghan skips the event, it will be the first Invictus Games she has missed since meeting Harry in 2016.
