Prince Andrew’s 1995 Photo Book Revisited
Prince Andrew has been thrust back into the spotlight in a new piece revisiting a largely forgotten creative sideline from the 1990s, when the Duke of York attempted to share his interest in photography through a published collection of personal images.
Hello Magazine reported that Prince Andrew released a photography book in 1995 titled Photographs: Andrew, Prince Duke of York, with a foreword describing it as “a small slice of autobiography recording memories and impressions through my eyes and the lens of a camera”.
The article says the book featured members of the Royal Family as subjects, as well as actress Finola Hughes, and that critics were harsh in their assessment, including a description from the Los Angeles Times branding it “sad and pathetic”.
In defending the project at the time, the Duke reportedly told journalists the “point” of photos of his nephew Prince Harry had been missed, adding: “A small baby, what was everybody expecting? Were they expecting a Snowdon-like portrait? I’m not that brilliant.” The retrospective comes amid ongoing coverage of Prince Andrew’s reported efforts to reshape his public image following his retreat from royal duties.
The episode underlines how past attempts to build a profile outside formal royal work continue to attract attention, particularly as questions persist about what role, if any, the Duke of York may play in public life in the future.
