Phil Collins recently opened up about his journey with Genesis and the decision to end their final tour in 2022. In an interview with Drumeo, he reflected on stepping away from the stage, admitting it’s been an adjustment. “It’s still kind of sinking in,” said Collins, now 71. “I’ve spent my whole life playing drums. To suddenly not be able to do that is a shock.”
Due to health challenges, including a dislocated vertebra, nerve damage, and foot fractures, Collins wasn’t able to drum during Genesis’s farewell tour. Despite the difficulties, he emphasized that he prefers to rest if he can’t perform at his best. However, he hasn’t completely ruled out a return, saying, “If I wake up one day and I can hold a pair of drumsticks, then I’ll have a crack at it.”
Since the last Genesis show in March 2022, Collins has largely stayed out of the public eye. However, in August, Simon Napier-Bell gave fans a hopeful update. He shared that Collins, now based by Lake Geneva, seemed energetic and full of stories. Napier-Bell also mentioned that Collins’s studio had been revamped, sparking speculation about potential new music in the future.
While fans are excited by the possibility of hearing new material, some expressed concern about his health. Comments online reflected a mix of relief at seeing him active again and worry about his frail appearance in recent years.
A Marquee Club documentary featuring Collins is in the works, but no release date has been announced yet. Fans are eagerly awaiting more news, both about the film and any new music he might create.
