The Oasis released (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? this week, 28 years ago. The album that had Roll with It, and Don’t Look Back in Anger in it cemented them as one of the biggest names in Britpop.
The album also included ‘Wonderwall’ in it, but Noel’s brother Liam didn’t like it in the first go. According to RadioX, Noel gave an interview to MOJO magazine in 2021 where he talked about how Liam didn’t care of this 1995 track.
Noel even went on to say that he laid down the law for the songs, Wonderwall and Don’t Look Back In Anger. This was after something happened on stage and Noel had to fill in for Liam.
I was so f***ed off with him walking off stage and me having to take over and do the gig. I remember thinking, if I’m going to do this, I want a big f***ng song to sing.
I said, ‘You’re singing one or the other, but not both.’ He hated Wonderwall. He said it was trip-hop. There speaks a man who’s never heard trip-hop.
Liam gave an interview to Far Out Magazine and clearly stated that he didn’t like it at first and thought it was a little funky. Noel also believes that the unfinished nature of the song is one of the reasons why it isn’t his favourite either. Despite being the first 1990s song to hit one billion streams, Noel said this to MOJO magazine:
I have no idea. It beggars belief.
Wonderwall is one of my least favourite songs because it’s not finished. If I could somehow twist time and go back there, I’d probably pick a different song for our calling card. Probably Some Might Say.
