A cafe owner in Jersey has lost around £800 after falling victim to a scam involving fake tickets for an Oasis concert. Jayne Gruchy, who runs Hooray Henri’s Beach Kiosk, thought she was purchasing tickets from a friend on Facebook after missing out on official sales. She bought four tickets priced at £150 each before realizing they were a scam, but it appears the official Oasis reunion lineup might have leaked.
Gruchy expressed her feelings of foolishness for being deceived. She later learned that the person she was communicating with had hacked her friend’s social media account to sell the fake tickets. It was only when her friend visited her cafe for breakfast that she discovered the truth.
“If he hadn’t come down here on Sunday for his usual breakfast, well, I would never have known.
“Nothing made me suspicious at all.”
She mentioned that there was nothing suspicious about the transaction and that the hacker acted calmly, making everything seem legitimate. Gruchy has reported the scam to Jersey Police, who noted that scammers are becoming increasingly sophisticated. She emphasized the financial impact, saying it would take a lot of work selling bacon rolls to make up for the loss and expressed concern that others might also fall prey to such scams.
“I’ve got to sell an awful lot of bacon rolls to make £800 so it does hurt financially for me,” she said.
“I wouldn’t like it to happen to someone else.
“Things… aren’t always what they seem.”
Jersey Police have been contacted for further comments. In response to such scams, Facebook stated that it removes content designed to deceive or exploit users and encourages people to report suspicious activities.
