Noel Gallagher has recently opened up about a collaboration that might have raised eyebrows in his younger days. The former Oasis member, known for his rivalry with Blur frontman Damon Albarn during the heyday of Britpop, reflected on their unexpected partnership in a candid interview with The Big Issue.
Via NME, The unlikely alliance occurred in 2017 when Gallagher lent his backing vocals to Gorillaz track ‘We Got The Power’ from their album ‘Humanz’. Contemplating the reaction of his younger self to this collaboration, Gallagher admitted: “What would my younger self think of me working with Damon Albarn?”
He further speculated that his response would heavily depend on his mood, stating: “It would depend entirely on what side of the bed I got out of on that day. If you caught me on a good day, I’d be like, yeah, I could see that happening… On a bad day, I’d f*cking knife myself in the bollocks.” A bit of a harsh statement, but what do we expect from Noel Gallagher? We have to let it slide.
The rivalry between Blur and Oasis, two prominent forces in the Britpop movement of the 1990s, was well-documented as they went head to head for chart success with their respective releases. Gallagher’s collaboration with Albarn carries a certain significance, considering their past musical and personal clashes.
Beyond his collaboration with Albarn, Gallagher also shared a curious anecdote about his encounter with the legendary David Bowie. Recalling a hazy memory from a 90s concert featuring Bowie and Morrissey, Gallagher revealed that he was invited to meet Bowie in his dressing room. However, due to his intoxicated state, he admitted to having no recollection of their conversation. Expressing regret, Gallagher wished he could travel back in time to fully appreciate the moment and express his admiration for the late icon.
So, maybe Noel isn’t too keen on remembering the time with Damon Albarn, but if he could change anything, it would be to remember just a second with David Bowie.
