Miley Cyrus isn’t worried about the plagiarism allegations made against her regarding her song “Flowers.”
Tempo Music Investments, which partly owns the copyright to Bruno Mars’ song “When I Was Your Man,” sued Miley and her co-writers for allegedly copying elements of the track in “Flowers.” In response, Miley’s legal team has filed to dismiss the case.
In legal documents filed on November 20, Miley’s team, along with co-writers Gregory Hein and Michael Pollack, and Sony Music, argued that the lawsuit lacks enough evidence to support the claims. They also stated that the accusations were merely legal opinions and did not require a response. Miley’s team is asking for the lawsuit to be dismissed and wants Tempo to cover their legal costs.
This lawsuit was filed by Tempo on September 16, accusing “Flowers” of copying parts of “When I Was Your Man,” including melody, lyrics, and musical elements. They claimed that Miley’s Grammy-winning success wouldn’t have been possible without Bruno Mars’ song.
“Flowers” topped the Billboard charts for 106 weeks after its release in January 2023, including eight weeks at number one. It also earned Miley her first two Grammy wins.
Miley has previously spoken out about not receiving recognition from the Grammys earlier in her career, noting that she’s been in the industry for 20 years and only recently started being taken seriously.
