Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are in the news because of how they spend money through their charity, Archewell. Some people say they are helping the Democratic Party in the U.S., even though royals are supposed to stay out of politics.
In 2023, Archewell paid over $146,000 to Jiore Craig, a political expert who has worked with Democrats for many years. She helps politicians deal with bad news and improve their public image. Her old company helped Bill Clinton become president and has worked with other Democrats too.
Archewell also gave $90,000 to Markup News, a nonprofit partly funded by billionaire Democratic supporter George Soros. Another big donation, $250,000, went to the Women’s Wellness Space, a group started by President Joe Biden’s daughter, Ashley Biden, to help women with mental health problems. The charity also paid more than $155,000 to a consulting company run by two former royal staff members.
Some people are upset about these payments. Nile Gardiner, a political expert, says Harry and Meghan should not be involved in politics because they are still royals. He believes their donations show they support the Democratic Party, even if they don’t say it out loud.
A spokesperson for Harry and Meghan said this is not true. They say the couple is not supporting any political party. Instead, they are helping causes like mental health and online safety. They also criticized people who are trying to attack them.
Still, some people think Meghan wants to get into politics. In the past, she and Harry have met with important Democratic politicians. In 2021, they even had a private video call with California Governor Gavin Newsom, which made people talk even more about Meghan’s political plans.
