Myles Kennedy claimed that Led Zeppelin were thinking about changing their name had he become their singer, replacing Robert Plant after he turned down a 2008 tour. Led Zeppelin ‘Pulled Plug’ On Famous Band At Show.
Kennedy told Linea Rock, “Well, it’s hard to believe it actually happened. Was I actually in Led Zeppelin? No.
“I mean, they were jamming, it was like two of the guys who’d been in Led Zeppelin [Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones], and [drummer] Jason Bonham who obviously was in Led Zeppelin when they did the reunion.
“But I think they were looking at it like, ‘Without Robert Plant, there’s no Led Zeppelin,’ and I totally agree with that, so it was going to be a project of some sort.
“I don’t know if they knew what, but they just wanted to play. I look at it – kind of like, it was an opportunity to get in a room with three guys who just wanted to hang, play some music, and it just so happened that they were the guys who basically wrote the blueprint for everything I do.
“It’s kind of insane. It would be like an architect getting a phone call getting in a time machine, and it’s, ‘Hey, it’s Frank Lloyd Wright here, and I’m interested – would you just come over and we’ll just design a house together?’
“It’s kind of the same sort of thing, and that’s my architecture, I’m a geek that way, so I looked at it as just this wonderful opportunity to be in a room with the guys who ultimately showed me everything that I know.
“And you know what the best part was? Playing music was wonderful, but I got to tell them what they meant to me. Just as a fan, I could say, ‘Hey…’ And it all lasted 30 minutes when I met them and finally I couldn’t keep it in anymore.
“I just said, ‘Look, I just got to tell you guys, I don’t know if I’m going to be here tomorrow or not, but thank you for writing the blueprint for all that we did.’
“And they just kind of looked at me and they’re like, ‘Yeah, that’s cool.’ They were nice about it, but you could tell they probably hear it every single day, but they were very gracious, it was awesome.” Ultimate-Guitar transcribed his comments.
