The owners of a surf shop in Orange County, California, have filed a lawsuit against Lady Gaga, claiming that the logo for her new album Mayhem is too similar to their own Mayhem brand. They are demanding that she stop using the logo and are seeking $100 million in damages.
Matt Biolos, one of the owners of Lost International LLC, says his business has been using the Mayhem name and logo for nearly 40 years. Biolos, whose nickname is “Mayhem,” trademarked the name in 2015. His brand is well known in surf, skate, and snowboarding culture.
Biolos and his business partner, Mike Reola, filed the lawsuit on Tuesday, arguing that Gaga’s Mayhem logo is “nearly identical” to theirs. They believe that Gaga’s use of the name and logo could hurt their brand’s reputation by making it seem too mainstream. Biolos claims his company has built its brand as part of an underground, counter-culture movement, and having a worldwide pop star use the same name could change how people see it.
Biolos also said that before filing the lawsuit, he tried to resolve the issue with Lady Gaga’s legal team. However, the discussions didn’t lead to a solution.
Gaga’s attorney, Orin Snyder, has strongly denied the claims, calling the lawsuit a “shakedown.” He said that Gaga’s album Mayhem has been a massive success, reaching No. 1 on the charts and breaking records. According to Snyder, the lawsuit is simply an attempt to take advantage of her success.
Lady Gaga released Mayhem, her seventh studio album, on March 7, 2025. She recently celebrated its launch at “Lady Gaga’s Club Mayhem” in Los Angeles.
