A statement issued by Buckingham Palace on behalf of the King explained that neither Charles nor other members of the royal family initially realized how severe the situation was while attending the event.
“While His Majesty and other Members of The Royal Family were present at the arena at the time the incident took place, they were not made aware of the severity of the situation until later.”
The statement continued:
“The King was greatly shocked and saddened to have learned subsequently of the Troop member’s death, and will be in touch with the family to share his personal condolences.”
The palace also confirmed that the thoughts of the entire royal family are with the soldier’s loved ones and military colleagues.
Edward, Duke of Edinburgh, Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, and Lady Louise Windsor were also attending the event.
Authorities stated there are currently no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death, but investigators are appealing for witnesses and information to help determine exactly how the fatal fall occurred.
Chief Superintendent Michael Loebenberg said police are working alongside the Ministry of Defence, the Defence Accident Investigation Branch, and event organizers to gather more details.
Following the tragedy, organizers confirmed the horse show will continue, though The King’s Troop display has been canceled.
Bottom line: King Charles and the royal family are mourning after a soldier tragically died following a fall at the Royal Windsor Horse Show, with police now investigating exactly how the fatal incident happened.
